Consultancy Opportunity: Midwifery Technical Assistance
The Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) is seeking one Canadian midwife consultant to provide technical assistance to the South Sudan Nurses and Midwives Association (SSNAMA) and the Association of Malawi Midwives (AMAMI).
This consultancy is part of CAM’s TRUST: Women’s Voice, Midwifery Leadership for Resilient Health project, a five-year initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada that works to strengthen gender-responsive and resilient health systems in Malawi and South Sudan.
The consultant will support the review, adaptation, development, and validation of in-service training materials for nurses and midwives. Working alongside national midwifery experts and other stakeholders, the consultant will help ensure training materials are contextually appropriate, evidence-based, aligned with national policies and clinical guidelines, and grounded in respectful maternity care, gender-responsive and rights-based approaches, and adult learning principles.
Key Responsibilities
The consultant will:
Review and adapt existing continuing professional development and training resources.
Develop and/or adapt training materials covering six clinical topics for Malawi and South Sudan.
Develop facilitator guides and companion materials, including presentations, participant handouts, job aids, clinical scenarios, simulation activities, and assessment tools such as pre/post-tests and OSCEs.
Work collaboratively with national midwifery experts and stakeholders to contextualize and validate the materials.
Participate in consultations and working sessions, including an in-person workshop in Malawi in November 2026.
Incorporate feedback from national stakeholders and finalize the training materials and evaluation tools.
Qualifications & Experience
Applicants should have:
A Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery or Nursing/Midwifery; a master’s degree is an asset.
Current or recent professional registration/licensure as a midwife in Canada.
At least 7 years of relevant professional experience in midwifery, including clinical practice, education, training, or technical advisory work.
At least 3 years of experience developing, reviewing, or adapting competency-based training materials for midwives, nurses, or other health professionals.
Experience developing facilitator guides, training modules, clinical scenarios, simulation exercises, job aids, and assessment tools, including OSCEs.
Strong knowledge of maternal and newborn health, SRHR, adult learning, respectful maternity care, and gender-responsive and rights-based approaches.
Strong technical writing, facilitation, stakeholder engagement, and cross-cultural communication skills.
Experience working in low-resource or global health settings, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, is considered an asset.
Excellent written and spoken English and the ability and willingness to travel to Malawi.
Contract Details
22 working days between October 2026 and January 2027
Final deliverables due January 30, 2027
Maximum professional fee: $20,746 CAD, inclusive of applicable taxes
CAM will cover eligible travel expenses, including roundtrip airfare from Canada to Malawi, in-country transportation, visa and processing fees, accommodation, and per diems.
