Arlette was one of the first Alberta midwives to be registered and, with other midwives, founded Birth Partnership. She gained a wealth of knowledge through the years and served as a preceptor for many. In 1975, she founded the Alternative Birthing Group (now Birth Unlimited) and started attending home births with a local doctor. As one of the incorporators of the AAM, she took on many leadership roles. Sandra dedicated 25 years to advancing the status of midwifery and worked tirelessly with the Alberta Midwifery Task Force and the Midwifery Regulation Advisory Committee to promote the legalization of midwifery and establishment of education and practice standards. She was one of the first registered midwives in Alberta and practiced with Briar Hills Midwives before retiring in 2006. She then worked with Cochrane’s Community Midwives until finally retiring in 2011. She developed an Inuit midwifery education program in Nunavut that included preserving local practices and traditions. She partnered with the late Noreen Walker in Passages Midwifery and was in the first cohort of Registered Midwives in 1998. She established Midwifery Care Partners in 2001 and practiced there until retiring in 2019. After years of colonization and assimilation, the role of Indigenous midwives was undermined, leaving a devastating impact on the preservation of culture and maternal and newborn health outcomes. The Alberta Association of Midwives is actively working against colonialism by taking steps to support our Indigenous members and communities, by supporting the resurgence of Indigenous midwifery and the cultural transformation needed to achieve this. Indigenous midwives play a key role in building healthy and safe Indigenous communities in rural and urban areas. In Alberta, there are approximately 10 Indigenous midwives who are engaged in the important work of “bringing birth home” to Indigenous communities, providing culturally appropriate care that honours Indigenous peoples, languages, oral cultures, and traditions. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. Having to travel great distances in rural settings to deliver a baby increases the risk of adverse outcomes for the birthing person and their baby. Exposure is even higher during seasons when the weather is severe, not to mention the financial burden, unnecessary intervention, psycho-social stress, and even roadside delivery. Unfortunately, many rural families experience multiple barriers to accessing perinatal care and midwives face many unique challenges in rural settings.
